i really like tetris battle gaiden

i recently added tetris battle gaiden to my SNES mini's library using hakchi. I beat the game for the first time today using halloween (an insanely op character). i definitely wanna play again using a different character

the game is similar to classic puyopuyo in that its a 1v1 puzzler where you defeat a series of opponents to win.

the movement feels very classic--no SRS, t-spins or hard drops. also, a lot more garbage is sent, one line for every line you clear it seems, which differs from modern tetris. this is probably to account for stacking taking way longer. but it makes every ability that gives you free lines very op, especially Halloween's 1-crystal attack which gives him 3 free lines to clear.

the main gimmick is that you can build meter by clearing crystals that appear inside some pieces. this meter can be spent to launch different attacks depending on your character and amount of crystals. these either help you, or sabotage your opponent.

this game features a shared "next" feed, a very interesting system that lets you fight over crystal pieces using clever timing. this system is veryreally interesting and I consider it a really based alternative to the hold system of modern tetris. it lets you pick and choose pieces but it requires skill and thought instead of just hitting a button.

i'd really like to see this games gimmicks explored with a modern movement system.

i've been going down a tetris variant rabbithole. i plan to check out Tetris with cardcaptor sakura: eternal heart & TETRACHROMA next.
