Go Outside, You Idiot

Published Jan. 9th 2025

"I prefer it when the world moves slower." I used to indulge in this preference through use of diazepam. A small little yellow pill could make a world of difference in my mental state and perspective--I don't consider myself to have been addicted at any point, but I was (ab)using this drug habitually and certainly unhealthily. Trust me, it didn't only have positive effects on me.

I say this, because, I want to say: We are replacing our natural mental/bodily functions with pills. Big pharma is outsourcing our ability of executive function to a handful of pills dedicated to making us feel a certain way. The older generation are all on opioids and benzos. The kids are glued to their caffeine and nicotine. We want to wake up and we head to our state-prescribed coffee machine to bestow upon us the optimal mental efficiency to wageslave all day with no energy left at the end for ourselves. Or we pay $4.50 NZD over and over and over and over again for a super-cool-looking can full of totally radical sugar and caffeine and weird chemicals. What the fuck are we doing? Would you believe me if I told you you don't have to do any of this?

We drink coffee (or... Redbull... Or monster...) in the morning because we're too groggy to do so independently. Just so we can use this energy to go and make money for companies. Do you know what else would wake you up? (and for free?) Stepping out into the cold morning air and going for a fucking walk.

When the system bears too much an effect on our mental health, and we consider killing ourselves instead of working, we take pills to make us feel better and ignore our actual feelings. Do you know what would actually make you feel better? Going for a fucking walk. Saying hi to a cat. Smelling the flowers. Enjoying the birdsong. Bearing witness to the beautiful orange-pink skies at the edge of nightfall.

At the end of this miserable day, the caffeine we've been chugging all day won't let us sleep. So we take pills to fix that too. Do you know what would also exert your energy and make it easy to sleep? Yes, you do know. I've said it twice now.

"I prefer it when the world moves slower." I indulge in this preference by turning off my computer and going outside. I walk in a line and it makes me feel amazing. The cold air on my skin jolts me to life. The birds waking up fill my ears with songs I've heard not. I walk past the sheep--They stare at me. Fair enough, I'd find humans weird too if I was a sheep. Of course the world moves too fast when the next hit of dopamine is one scroll away. I get this blehh overwhelmed feeling even with just a laptop and not a smartphone its so fucked uppppppp lol

The power button is named appropriately. It IS very powerful. It can take you from feeling agitated and apathetic all day and achieving nothing to feeling an active sense of growth and achievement. Press the power button sometimes. Look out a window even, maybe. Or don't. You could also keep rotting on your computer and subscribe to my youtube and read all my blogposts, that'd actually be pretty neat.
